A global biopharmaceutical company needed a product development process from active ingredient through finished drug product. This required process and systems standardization with significant ongoing initiatives in pursuit of its strategy, including;
- Physical network reduction and product retirement program
- Significant external partnerships and construction of a new $1B+ biotechnology plant
- Moving products to CMOs, including API, bulk, and finished product
- Complex Tax Effective, and Efficient Supply Chain Management and tolling transaction environment
Task
The changing technical operations environment required a simplified internal landscape that would support an evolving product portfolio while optimizing the use of manufacturing assets. At the same time, they needed to meet three operation imperatives:
- Supply chain optimization,
- Ensure end-to-end product visibility
- Enhanced integration across all Technical Operations
Actions
WiserWulff’s consultants took the following actions to meet the client’s operational imperatives:
- Established a PMO to manage a complex multi-dimensional portfolio of initiatives
- Drove 26 “Standard Model” program initiatives to build a common platform to “right fit” processes
- Captured critical business issues and impacts, and key considerations for the design and deployment of a Standard Plant Model
- Using the SCOR Model evaluated plan, procure, make, test, and distribution processes and technical systems
- Determined and managed scope boundaries, processes, and systems for the future state organization
- Drove instantiation of initiatives to completion
Results
As a result, the client experienced the following benefits.
- Implementation multi-dimensional portfolio of supply chain and manufacturing initiatives led to the enhancement of business processes, technology, product visibility, and integration of the Technical Operations function of the business across all manufacturing and CMO operations
- Plant standardization resulted in the ability to compare overall plant network performance and shutdown costly plant operations based on consistently applied metrics
